Here’s How to Know What Deserves Your Attention in the Moment
I’m married to the guy who is always in a hurry (impatient) when he’s driving. No idea why. Because he’s only in a hurry when he’s driving. LOL
It doesn’t matter where we’re going either.

Which is the faster lane? The shorter lane? Choosing to take the highway before avoiding one. Why can’t people in front of him take off faster when the light turns green?
Really? You’re 5 cars back. It’s gonna take a few seconds before it’s your turn to move forward, Sir.

In all this “hurry”…what’s he missing? 🤔
  • Landmarks.
  • Street signs.
  • A beautiful park.
  • The restaurant we might want to check out some day.
  • The conversation…I’m trying to have.
  • The sunset.
Speed is useful. But when everything has to move faster…when you just have to move faster…it gets harder and harder to notice what’s worth your attention.

It’s easy to miss the things that could just bring a little more joy in your life. Can I just say…this is a topic worth slowing down for?

Admit it or not…your “calendar” is shaped by small decisions you make every day: what you say yes to, what you check one more time, and what you keep putting off because other people’s needs feel more urgent. I’m not talking about family emergencies, either.

Why “more efficient” doesn’t always feel better down the road

When it comes to efficiency…I could have written the book. I love me a good routine, tool, or system to make it a little bit better.

If something saves you time on regular work, you might want to use it. Good choice!
But the trouble starts…when the time you save is immediately filled with more tasks. Uh-oh.

You clear your inbox faster, so you take on another project. You use AI to prepare for meetings quick, then add two more meetings to the week. You find a better way to manage your schedule, but never leave any open space in it.

What’s wrong with this picture?

What I’ve seen in some is, there are times when they may be getting more done than ever. Yay!
And those same people might still feel as though they’re low on time, falling behind...missing out. Can you relate?

If so, let me encourage you here. That feeling deserves your attention. It can be a sign that you’re trying to make room for everything, even though everything doesn’t belong in this season of your life.

That’s a truth-in-love statement. Please read that again.

I’m not suggesting you stop caring about your work (or ministry). I wouldn’t do that. You’ve built something that matters, and people count on you. I am inviting you to look closer at what your current pace is asking of you…and whether you want to keep answering every request the same way.

Choosing without changing.

Start with a better question than “How can I fit it all in?”

Yes. There is a better question. Because that’s sounds like striving for work/life balance to me. 🤔

When your week feels crowded...hold on, grasshopper. Before you rearrange your schedule, try this question:

“What needs my attention most right now?”

Give yourself a few minutes to answer it…honestly.

Here’s what happens when you’re being honest with yourself.
  • You might discover that a client decision needs to be made.
  • Maybe a conversation at home…really needs to happen.
  • Or maybe…just maybe…your body needs a full night’s sleep.
  • You might realize you’ve been spending time perfecting something to share…that’s already good enough. 🙋🏽‍♀️
From there, ask:
“What am I giving attention to…out of habit?”

That question is pretty deep. And the answer may be uncomfortable.
  • Do you find yourself checking messages whenever a task gets difficult?
  • Maybe you say “yes” quickly because you don’t want to disappoint someone.
  • Ever keep rethinking a decision you already made?
I call this, practical personal development. It means you’re learning to recognize what drives your choices while there’s still time to make a different one. And that’s a good thing!

Protect the work that only you can do

In a fast-paced world, being responsive matters. And so does having enough room to think.
I mean…think about it. (No pun intended.)

  • A consultant needs time to understand the client’s real problem before offering a solution.
  • A business owner needs time to consider what kind of growth the business can (really) support.
  • A leader needs enough presence to notice when a team member is struggling, even if every project looks fine on paper.
Those things are easy to crowd out because they typically don’t show up as urgent calendar alerts, or push notifications, right? 📳

So…try this: Look at the coming week. Choose one piece of work that calls for your judgment, or creativity, or even care. In other words, it needs your attention in some way. Now, put time around it. Yes!

If possible, give it a place…a space in your day when you can think clearly, then decide what can wait while you do “it.”
Now, this might mean letting your inbox sit for two hours. 🤣

It might mean asking a colleague to make a decision they’re equipped to make. Eh-hem. It might mean turning down a meeting that doesn’t need you there. Just sayin.

This kind of professional development includes learning where your contribution of talents is most valuable. That takes an identity check. You don’t have to be available for every step to lead well. But it is important that you know how to lead yourself well…first. Protect that too.

Let your life have a place in the plan

Your work is part of your life. And it’s probably a meaningful part. I get that. But I can assure you…it isn’t the only part that needs your attention…your care.

If you keep telling yourself you’ll rest, connect with family, or pay attention to your health once things settle down…take an honest look at your calendar.

What would have to change for that time to appear?
What’s one change you can make now?

It could be a lunch break away from all screens twice this week. A walk after your last call of the day. A firm stop time on one evening. Ten unhurried minutes with someone you love…with your phone in another room.

Choose something small enough to do during a demanding week. Do that. Then notice how it feels.
  • Does that walk help you return less distracted?
  • Does an earlier stop time give you energy for tomorrow?
This is what I mean by orchestration, not balance. Your days won’t always have equal parts work, family, rest, and everything else. You can still make thoughtful choices about how those parts fit together…in sweet harmony!

Make one decision before the coming rush makes it for you

As the year winds down, you may feel some pressure to finish strong. I even have a program for that! LOL

But really. I’m talking here about the pressure to set next year’s goals, and stay fully present through the holidays. That’s a lot to hold at once and handle wisely.

How about something simple you can try today? 💡

Start with one decision you’ve been delaying. Just one.

Maybe it’s which project gets your energy for the rest of the year. Maybe it’s a conversation about capacity with your team or family. Maybe it’s deciding that a new opportunity is good, but its timing? Not so much.
Write down the decision and what you know today. Today. Not overthinking it.
  • What matters most here?
  • What would this choice require of you?
  • What might it make possible?
And if you feel you need more information…name exactly what you need and when you’ll get it.
Then take the next reasonable step. You can adjust as you learn more.

The thing to remember here is that leaving any decision open has a cost, too. It takes up attention you could use elsewhere.

Here’s What I Know to Be True

You can be capable, grateful for your work, and tired at the same time. You can care deeply about the people who rely on you and still need to change how much access they have to your time.

Your worth isn’t measured by how quickly you respond or how full your calendar looks.

I believe God created you on purpose, from purpose, for purpose. That includes the person you are when no one is asking you to produce anything. The person you are when no one is looking.

The choices that support your well-being may look ordinary from the outside. Going to bed. Asking for help. Saying, “I can do this next week.” Giving your family your full attention for one meal. And those ordinary choices…made consistently…can change how you experience your days. Your life.

Here’s My Encouragement to You

Before you add another goal in your journal, or tool in your toolbox…pause and look at the life you’re living this week. No, but really.

Now, pick one area that needs your attention most: your mind, your body, or your spirit. Then choose one step forward you can take today. With intention. You don’t need a perfect plan to begin.

Just be the chooser. Choose an area. Step into inspired action. Repeat.

If you’d like support making those choices in real time, the Bridge to Wholeness Reset gives you a focused, five-day place to start. We begin with a Cuppa Connection call to clarify your Reset, then stay connected through private coaching chat during your Reset week. You can start with the area that matters most to you right now.

You have permission to pay attention to, and be present in your life…while you build what matters. 😎

Keep walking.
