The Bridge Before You: Stepping into Life’s Transitions
Where are you standing right now, in your life? What’s your view?
I don’t know about you, but the last 6 years for me, has been FULL of life transitions. Yep. Some were planned; others unexpected.
Whether you're stepping into a new career, adjusting to an empty nest, or simply feeling a shift and the nudge to change how you move through your life…it’s times like these that can feel like standing at the edge…of a bridge.
And whether you can actually SEE the other side or not, the other side holds possibility. JOY-ous possibility. However…the crossing can feel uncertain, overwhelming, a little shaky, or even lonely. The good news? You don’t have to navigate it alone. AND you can do it with confidence.
Every bridge has two ends: where you've been and where you're going. The key is how you walk across. And how you walk across depends on who you are. Confidence doesn't come from knowing every step ahead. It comes from knowing you are equipped to take the next step, even if it's small.
Let’s explore how to bridge the gap (pun intended) between where you are and where you're meant to be at this time in your life, with clarity and momentum.
Mapping Your Transition: How to Approach Life’s Bridges
Before you take that first step, it’s important to understand what kind of bridge you’re crossing. Ask yourself:
- Is this a transition I chose or one that life presented to me?
- Will this bridge contain a person, place, or thing toward the transition?
- What’s on the other side of this bridge that I’m hoping to reach?
- What emotions am I carrying as I prepare to cross…excitement, fear, or maybe both?
Naming the bridge can help set your mindset. It turns the unknown into something you can approach intentionally, instead of reacting repeatedly or mindlessly on autopilot. Some call it a season, an adventure, or even part of their purpose path. What would you call yours?
Momentum Markers: Small Steps That Build Confidence
Crossing a bridge doesn’t happen in one giant leap. (That would be painful.) It happens one plank, one brick…one step at a time. The key is to focus on momentum markers—those small, intentional actions that move you forward without feeling overwhelming. Here are a few ways you can create those markers:
Clarify Your Why
Transitions will most likely stir up doubts. If it’s one you chose, ground yourself by getting crystal clear on why this bridge matters. Is it about more peace in your life? A healthier lifestyle? Pursuing a dream that's been waiting on the back burner?
If it’s one that life has presented to you, ground yourself by getting crystal clear on why this bridge can be a part of what matters.
Write it down. Keep it visible. Your why becomes your anchor when the bridge feels shaky.
Identify What’s in Your Control
One of the biggest confidence-killers in transitions is focusing on what you can't control. It’s a waste of time and energy. Flip the script by listing what YOU are responsible for. Whether it's setting boundaries, managing your schedule, or simply choosing your mindset and attitude each day.
Make this clear. Small wins in your control build steady momentum.
Make Room for Both Confidence and Uncertainty
Oh…I can see the eye roll. 🙄 You don’t have to feel 100% ready to take a step. Confidence isn’t the absence of uncertainty. But…you knew that…right? It’s choosing AND trusting that you’ll learn as you walk. Give yourself permission to hold both emotions at once. Reminder: Confidence comes from knowing you are equipped to take the next step, even if it's small. Uncertainty can simply mean…not knowing the step you are equipped to take!
Try journaling your thoughts at the start or end of each day. What moments sparked confidence? What questions still linger? What can you pray about? This practice helps you see how far you're already moving, even if the bridge still feels long, and can shed some light on what’s ahead.
Build a Support System
No bridge is meant to be crossed alone. Surround yourself with people who encourage your progress…whether that's a friend who cheers you on, a coach who helps you clarify your next steps, or a community walking their own bridges, and “know that feeling.”
Accountability can be powerful. Momentum thrives in connection. BOOM!
Crossing with Clarity
The middle of the bridge can feel like the hardest part; the place where you've come too far to turn back, but the other side still feels out of reach. But, oh…I love this place, because this is where SO much happens! (When you know what to do.) And in the end, clarity becomes your guide forward.
Clarity comes through action. If you're waiting for confidence to magically appear before you move…you might be waiting till eternity! Ain’t no magic wands on your bridge, my friend. Trust the process, because each small step reveals more of the path ahead.
Ask yourself daily: What's one small step I can take today to move closer to the other side? Maybe it’s scheduling that first consult call, clearing a small space in your home or calendar for new routines…or simply taking five minutes to pray or reflect.
The Other Side: What Awaits You
No bridge lasts forever. They come in all shapes, sizes, and lengths. The beauty of transitions is that they lead somewhere…often to more than you imagined when you first stepped on. With each simple step, you're not just crossing into a new life chapter. On no, my friend. You’re becoming someone who walks with more clarity, confidence, and purpose. Hopefully more of who God created you to BE.
And if you're not sure what that looks like for you, how to take that first (or next) step? That’s where I come in. 😎
