Where Does Momentum Start?
Have you ever tried to create or build momentum, only to find…it’s a struggle to just...keep...going?

Today, I’d like to introduce you to the concept of…

Mindset before momentum

You see, I believe that people misunderstand and underestimate the power of momentum in their life. And because of that, they really don’t know how to get things going AND keep them going...through mindset.

Let me explain.

Have you ever watched a track and field event? The participants start at the “start” line, and believe me…they’re not just hanging out, waiting for the gun to go off. They are focused. Then they are ready. Then they are good to GO!

So, what’s happening here? They’re getting their mind SET, so they can build momentum right into and through their movement…to the end. Yaas!

Here’s what I know to be true: In life, momentum, at its core, isn’t about movement first. It’s about mindset FOR the movement...again, and again, and again.

You don’t get momentum just by doing more. You build momentum by thinking differently.

That’s where it starts…before the strategy, before the schedule, before the step. And that’s why it keeps you going…while doing the strategy, while working the schedule, while taking the steps.

Whether you’ve been feeling like your thoughts are fogged up like a windshield that’s struggling between the internal and external temperature and humidity on a rainy day, (SO annoying)...
OR...firing in all directions like a display on the 4th of July that shows up better than it’s setup…you might just benefit from what I’m sharing.

(Did you get the visuals, there? ๐Ÿค”)

Let’s take a look inside…

Momentum Starts in the Mind

Before your feet hit the floor in the morning, your mind has probably already decided what kind of day it might be. And while we can’t control what the day brings, we can choose the mindset we walk into it with.

Mindset is not magical fluff thinking. It’s mental direction. It's the quiet, inner shift that says, “Today, I choose to lead with clarity. I choose to walk in purpose. I choose to think and BE in alignment with who I really am.”

Yeah, okay…maybe you’re not actually saying all those things, but…like I said…it’s the mental direction you’re choosing to go. And go you will, with clarity, purpose, and alignment.

That shift? That’s the spark of momentum. ๐Ÿ˜Ž It inspires repeated action…forward.

It's quiet, yes. But powerful. Powerfully forward, like the lift off from the start line on the track. GO!

It might sound like:
  • I don’t have to have it all figured out, but I can take the next “best” step.
  • I am equipped for today, so today I will…
  • God’s already in it with me.
The internal momentum begins when you remember what’s true…and in alignment...then let THAT (mindset) lead.

What’s Feeding or Freezing Your Thought Life?

Sometimes the reason we feel stuck, isn't because we’re lazy or unmotivated. It’s because our thoughts are overfed with the wrong stuff, keeping us full and uncomfortable. OR…starved of what they need to be nourished and healthy. Yep. The symptoms of deficiency are showing. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ

Ask yourself:
  • What’s been on repeat in my mind lately?
  • Who (or what) am I giving mental access to, that hasn’t earned it?
  • What thoughts energize me, and which ones have stopped me? Well…the only movement is me circling the same drain. Ugh.
Whether it’s the doom-scroll, someone else’s expectations, or a tired story you’ve believed for WAY too long…your mental input always shapes your internal momentum.

Start letting go of the mind junk, and receive something more aligned with your full identity. AND aligned with truth, hope, clarity, vision, peace, and JOY. All of these things are like the spokes in your wheel of life!

Can you see it?

Just like you watch what you eat for a nourished body…start watching what your thoughts are feeding you, for a nourished mind and spirit. Momentum.

Your Mindset Has a Mouth

What??

Here’s a reminder we don’t always want to hear:

The thoughts you believe are the words you speak. Your words are often just your mindset out loud.

So if your inner dialogue is anxious, scattered, or self-critical... don’t be surprised if that spills into how you talk about yourself, your life, your work, your family, or your next steps.

Want to check your mindset? Listen to your mouth.

Then ask:
  • Is what I’m saying aligned with what I REALLY believe to be true?
  • Am I reinforcing fear…or walking in wisdom?
  • Am I speaking life over my own journey?
Powerful, powerful questions. And that last one is HUGE.

When your mindset and your mouth are in alignment with your identity, you’ll feel the shift. Oh yeah, you will. ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ

And let me tell ya…momentum follows that alignment. Every time. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Pause and Practice:

Over the next few days, I encourage you to take 5 minutes to do a “thought inventory.” The good. The bad. The indifferent.

Then, ask yourself:
What (negative) thoughts have I rehearsed so much, they’ve started to shape my words, AND my next steps…even when I don’t mean for them to?

Then challenge the ones that freeze you.

Feed the ones that free you.

Speak from the ones that align with who you were created to BE…as you’re becoming.

A Truth to Close

You don’t have to be perfect.  You just have to be willing to shift.

And that shift? That’s where real, lasting momentum begins and builds. Celebrate!

Implementation

Write freely. No censoring. Get the swirl out of your head and onto paper.

My recent thoughts sound like...

2. Freeze or Feed?
Now, choose 3–5 thoughts from your list and identify what they’re doing to your momentum. Are they feeding your forward motion, or freezing you in place? Why might this be happening?

3. Align and Affirm
Replace one freezing thought with one aligned with your identity and purpose. Speak this out loud daily for the next week.

Freezing Thought:

New Aligned Thought (truth-filled and forward focused to Affirm):

4. Check Your Mouth
Your mindset often shows up in your words. What have you said out loud this week that reflects what’s going on in your thoughts?

This week, I heard myself saying...

Now, shift it:

Next time, I’ll choose words that sound like this instead...

5. Choose Your Thought Focus Word or Phrase This Week
